 Create and Collaborate Mornings

In the morning we'll start the day with a yoga session with Vassiliki Mandalou or a walk in the breathtaking forest or you can opt for a morning celebration Jive & Come Alive session by the pool. Or just sit and enjoy a Java shot. It's up to you.  After breakfast, there will be a short brain gym session, followed by hands on  workshops from 9.00-12.30

Yoga sessions

Vassiliki’s morning yoga and breathing sessions focus on helping people boost their confidence by reducing the stress levels in both their private lives and in a teaching environment. These sessions help educators maintain balance and at the same time they enhance their ability to think, act and teach outside the box.

Hands-on workshops will ignite your creative spark and inspire you to develop  innovative materials for learners. At the same time, you will have time to nurture your own unique style, to create the project that makes your heart sing. Together we'll evaluate and discuss your ideas and take them to the next level.  A wonderful opportunity to come together with like-minded colleagues from around the globe in an idyllic space.

Examples of sessions

• Free writing and Create! sessions will bring out your inner child

•  Poetry in Motion sessions will free your flow

 Workshop hosts

Dr. Kamile Hamiloglu

Dr. Kamile Hamiloğlu has worked as a teacher-trainer, academic and lecturer for over three decades and is the author of several ELT course books. She currently teaches undergraduate and post graduate programmes at Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey. Her current interests include curriculum, material and coursebook evaluation and design and reflection and critical thinking. She is a presenter and keynote speaker at international conferences.

This session will explore the integration of major 21st century skills such as collaboration, co-operation, reflection and critical thinking in material writing in the ELT (ESL) world. These skills have a very important role to play in academic, professional and personal development as “adhesive bonds” for learning, awareness, improvement and self-actualisation and prepare learners for their future. As teachers we inevitably strive to help our learners achieve their potential.

The main focus will be how teachers can help learners recognise, use, evaluate, harmonise, synthesise, adopt, and adapt the 21st century skills with the help of EFL materials. We will look at the impact of traditional and cutting-edge EFL/ESL materials and the increasing use of technology on material design.

We will examine ELT materials and consider how they address critical reflection, critical thinking and collaboration as 21st century skills. During the sessions, delegates will evaluate published ELT materials and consider how they can be adapted to include these skills. At the same time, we will consider how to integrate these skills into our own materials.

Julie Pratten

Create and Collaborate for Change

The ELT world is ready for an Independent Publishing Shakedown. Everyone has a writing dream, whether it's an ebook, TD materials, or a blended learning course. Let's create the head space for reflection and flow. Embark on your project, pursue your own idea or start a collaborative project. By working through a menu of publishing options and creating your personal author toolkit, delegates will define their end 'product' by the end of the retreat. The welcoming and relaxing ambiance of Erendiz Resort Hotel in Antalya will give you the head space to realise your own writing project.

Julie Pratten is the director of Academic Study Kit, an award-winning indie publisher that publishes photocopiable activity books. The first ASK book won the David Riley award for Innovation in BE and English for Specific Purposes in 2015. Julie's mission is to drive change in the ELT world and put indie authors on the map. She is also the founder of Heart ELT Publishing, a non-profit organisation that publishes crowdsourced books to raise funds for children who cannot access education.

Vassiliki Mandalou

Poetry in Motion

'Poetry in motion' is a new way of approaching poetry and kinesiology by combining kinesthetic and emotional elements of rhythm and literature. Motion is not only moving in a certain space but moving from our inside to outside world and thus conveys our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Vassiliki shows how teachers can use poetry in the classroom to combine writing and speaking skills with movement; fully engaging learners through poetry and giving them space to explore. Unlock your imagination through creative poetry writing and teamwork.

Vassiliki has worked as a freelance teacher of philology, literature and philosophy for over 15 years. She also works with learners with special needs and learning difficulties. She is a keen advocate of Socratic thinking and enjoys using materials that promote creativity and encourage learners to express their own uniqueness.

Michelle Hunter

Michelle has worked as a "learner coach" since becoming a certified coach in 2011. Now, with her 18 years’ EFL teaching experience, she provides a unique learning environment for both students in the ELT classroom, and colleagues working on their personal and professional development. Michelle is an A-Z author and has written extensively for ELT journals and magazines. She also enjoys sharing her learning at teachers’ conferences. The moto she strives to emulate: “ease creates; urgency destroys”.

Thinking Partnerships

The quality of everything we do depends on the quality of the thinking we do first. The quality of our thinking depends on the way we treat each other while we are thinking. The Thinking Environment developed through observation and research by renowned coach Nancy Kline since 1985, provides a way to generate the finest independent thinking.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to the Ten Components which make up the Thinking Environment and come to understand their relevance and impact in our daily lives. Through a mixture of whole group, small group and individual exercises, we will try out three different variations of thinking.
